After 7 Years With PERI System, the Costliest Lessons Were the Smallest Details

When I look back at the mistakes I've made with formwork, none of them were caused by the PERI system itself. They were caused by the small details I assumed someone else would catch. In seven years of handling PERI system orders, I've documented 14 significant mistakes that cost roughly $38,000 in wasted budget. The most expensive lesson is this: the size of the problem is never equal to the size of the part.

I'm not a structural engineer. I'm the person who orders the components, checks the delivery against the drawings, and hands it to the crew. That means I've seen the gap between paper and reality more times than I'd like to admit. I now maintain a pre-pour checklist for our team. This article is the part of the checklist nobody posts on the wall.

The short version

If you work with a PERI system, do three things before your next pour. First, verify the actual color and coating against a physical sample, not a PDF. Second, protect sensitive parts like solenoid valves from dust and water even when they're sitting in storage. Third, make sure everyone reading a tape measure knows the units on the drawing and the units on the tape. Those three details have caused more downtime than any panel failure I've seen.

Why I keep a list

My first bad year was 2018. I ordered a batch of tie cones because the price looked good. The red was close enough on screen. In daylight, the cone color was more orange than the PERI red panels. The crew spotted it before the pour. Every cone went back. $2,100 in freight plus a day of re-sequencing. Not a structural problem. A color problem.

Why do I keep a list? Because memory is not a system. That's when I started asking what's NOT included in a quote. The supplier who lists all fees and samples upfront, even if the total looks higher, usually costs less in the end. Hidden costs are still costs. I've learned to ask for a physical color sample before touching a purchase order.

The red that wasn't red

PERI color is a functional identifier. On a busy site, the red coating is how you know a component belongs to the PERI system. It also carries corrosion protection. Touching it up with a different red isn't just cosmetic.

Pantone's color matching literature uses Delta E as a tolerance measure. A Delta E under 2 is generally considered invisible to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. As of January 2025, our project spec requires Delta E below 2 against an approved PERI red sample. For tie cones, that might sound extreme. But if the red is off, the crew starts to wonder what else is off. That's not a risk I want on a wall form.

Shower caps and solenoid valves

Now for the strangest item on my checklist: shower caps. Cheap, disposable shower caps. Not for hair. For a solenoid valve.

Last fall, a 300-yard concrete pour was nearly delayed because the pump's solenoid valve kept cycling erratically. The maintenance tech found water and dust in the coil enclosure. The valve itself was fine. The problem was storage: it had sat in an open compartment on the pump trailer for three weeks while the site was being prepared. Dust and morning dew got in.

We now keep a box of shower caps in the trailer. It sounds ridiculous. It costs almost nothing. But putting a shower cap over an exposed solenoid valve coil before storage is the difference between a 4 a.m. pour start and a 7 a.m. parts run. Sometimes the cheapest fix looks the silliest.

How to read a tape measure, before it costs a day

I know, how to read a tape measure sounds too basic for a formwork article. But the basics fail under pressure.

On one project, the drawings specified tie centers in millimeters. The guy checking anchor points used an imperial tape and read it in decimal inches. He converted 2,700 mm to about 106.3 inches, rounded it to 106, and started marking. That's 0.3 inches off per bay. Over 18 bays, it added up to 5.4 inches. The tie holes didn't line up. The PERI panel system wasn't wrong. The drawing wasn't wrong. The rounding was wrong.

When I say how to read a tape measure is a safety issue, I mean it. A 5.4-inch misalignment can turn a scheduled pour into a rush rework job. Now I write the units directly on the measurement plan in three places, and I make the crew read the numbers back to me before marking begins. It feels like babysitting. It avoids expensive late-night surprises.

The system is only a system if you follow it

PERI system components are engineered to work together. The panel size, tie pattern, waler spacing, and shoring load tables are connected. Look, more bracing isn't always safer. It can block a pour, create a trip hazard, or conflict with the specified access route. The system has a logic. You have to respect it.

When I ignore this advice

Honestly, not every job needs a Delta E color check. If you're pouring a small slab or a temporary access path, a slightly off colored cone and a rounded measurement probably won't matter. And I should add: I'm not an engineer and my memory isn't perfect. The $38,000 number includes direct rework, freight, and replacement parts from my own records for 2018 through 2025. It doesn't include the cost of lost sleep. That part is higher.

The thread through all of it is the same. Details are not optional. You don't need to be perfect. You need to catch the small mistakes before they become the expensive ones.
