Why I Stopped Chasing The Lowest Price On Concrete Formwork (And What I Do Instead)

I think most contractors get formwork selection wrong from the start.

When I took over purchasing for our mid-sized construction firm back in 2020, I figured the smartest play was simple: find the cheapest price for the components we needed. I'd done this for office supplies and it worked fine. But concrete formwork? That was a different beast entirely. After a few expensive mistakes — and one particularly bad month I still get asked about — I've changed my mind completely.

I now believe that the single most important factor when choosing a concrete formwork system is its modularity and system integration — not the upfront price per square foot.

Here's why I came around, and what I'd tell anyone currently comparing options for their next project.

The 'good deal' that wasn't

Back in Q3 2022, we landed a mid-rise residential contract — nothing too complex, five stories, standard layouts. I went with a supplier whose per-unit cost was about 15% lower than the major system providers. The components were functional, but they were essentially standalone parts from different product lines. Nothing was designed to work together seamlessly.

When we started on site, the problems hit immediately. Connecting the deck panels to the wall forms required custom bracketry — which we had to source from a third party, adding two weeks to the schedule. The shoring posts had a different pin size than the horizontal beams we'd ordered. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the initial 15% savings evaporated once we accounted for the extra labor hours, the crane time wasted, and the two-week delay (which triggered a penalty clause). We ended up spending roughly 22% more than if we'd just bought the integrated system from the start. That was the overconfidence fail I needed to learn from.

The first argument: Time is the real budget killer

Here's the thing about construction: delays are a death by a thousand cuts. It's not just the overtime pay. It's the concrete pump rescheduled at a higher rate. It's the finishing crew standing around. It's the project manager's stress level — which, honestly, has a cost of its own.

When I compared our Q3 2022 project side-by-side with a similar project we did in 2024 using a fully integrated system (basically, all components from the same supplier), the time difference was stark. The 2024 project crew stripped and reset the forms in about 60% of the time the previous crew needed. Why? The third argument: Flexibility when plans change (and they always do)

No architectural plan survives first contact with the jobsite. On one project — a 2-story commercial space — the architect changed a beam layout halfway through the foundation. With our old piecemeal system, that change would have meant ordering new custom-length components and waiting. But isn't the integrated system too expensive?

I get this question all the time. And the honest answer is: yes, the initial quote is higher. I stopped chasing the lowest upfront price because I saw, in real dollars and real delays, that it was a false economy. Modularity, system integration, and supplier engineering support aren't luxuries — they're the features that actually protect your timeline and your budget. That's my view, based on five years of ordering these systems and making every mistake in the book.

You can go cheap on a lot of things. Concrete formwork shouldn't be one of them.
